VERY handy to the Darby Street cafe {aac} precinct is this 12-year-old brick terrace house, with side-lane access to a courtyard garden.

In a quaint street that mixes old with new, the house has been home for seven years for Emma Callinan, the co-owner of the Jamaica Blue cafe {aac} at Westfield Kotara.

Now marrying and moving to Sydney, Ms Callinan said the location almost backing onto Goldbergs was the main appeal.

But the security of the property was also a selling point, with decorative bars on downstairs windows, internal access from the single garage and a gated courtyard entry.

When Ms Callinan took possession in 2000, the house was exposed brick inside and out.

While the exterior is still bare, Ms Callinan rendered much of the interior and painted throughout in modern latte tones.

She also replaced some of the floor tiles on the lower level laying sisal carpet in the lounge and dining rooms and installed timber venetians on all windows and plantation shutters as room dividers.

The house packs a lot into a small block, with kitchen and living areas downstairs and three bedrooms plus another living area upstairs.

There's also a bathroom on each level, the main with a bathtub, and an ensuite off the master bedroom.

The kitchen is at the rear of the lower level and has cream Laminex benchtops and beech veneer cabinets.

A glass splashback painted to tone in with the walls gives a modern touch.

The laundry and downstairs bathroom are tucked behind separate sets of double doors, almost as if cupboards, although both are roomy.

The carpeted bedrooms on the upper level are surprisingly large, the main offering a walk-in robe and the others built-ins.

The front two share a balcony overlooking the street.

The upstairs living area has a split-system air-conditioner.
