Every day you hear and see energy workers whining about the State Government's power privatisation issues and now we have the teachers complaining about the same Government. Who voted them in in the first place? I expect the same people that are doing the complaining will vote for the Greens or Labor again at the next election.

Geoff Nelson, Charlestown

Mark Harris (Letters 2/9) asks: do our politicians really think we are that stupid? The majority opposed our involvement in the Iraq War; John Howard ignored us but was re-elected in 2004. How many of us who will be voting in council elections on September 13 have ever attended a council meeting? Very few I suspect, and then only when there was an issue that affected the person closely. If more people took an interest in practical politics at every level our vote would be based on knowledge rather than the advertising guff that we get just before an election. We get the governments we deserve.

Joan Lambert, Adamstown

Australia spends $22 billion a year on defence against an unidentified enemy who, so far, has not indicated any intention of attacking this continent. Let's offer them, say, $6 billion a year on condition they do not assemble armed forces for an invasion and, at the same time, assemble a peace-keeping force in the region. This would release $16 billion a year for hospitals and other good things. If adopted globally, this scheme would free up $1.5 trillion a year for humanity.

Following the breakdown of my six-kilowatt split-system air-conditioner, I was informed by my insurance company that systems above four kilowatts are not covered. Be sure to read the fine print in your contents insurance policy.

To Keith Gibbs (SMS 28/8) and Lindsay Young (SMS 30/8), in the words of "The Newcastle Song", it's so beautiful my dear you can bury me here. Mr Gibbs follows the Bulldogs and look where they are; and I believe Mr Young has had a set against Brian Smith for years. So it looks like the Life Of Brian continues. Always look on the bright side of life, Knights fans.

I agree with ronald ross (Short takes 1/9). No excuses, no tolerance for graffiti. Restore respect for other people's property.

Wendy Purvis, Maryville

Bye bye mr costa, make it sooner rather than later.

Karen Robertson, Fennell Bay

Perhaps Jack Jones (Short takes 2/9) should spend a day in a wheelchair.
